For some reason, Google have neglected to provide instructions on how to connect to their new Google Talk instant messaging service using the Kopete instant messenger. Clearly it should work, because Google is using the Jabber protocol which is supported by Kopete. Anyway, after a bit of playing around with the settings, I've figured out how it's done.
From the main Kopete window pay a visit to "Settings" and then "Configure Kopete". This should take you to the "Accounts" panel where you need to click on "New" on the right hand side. A wizard pops up, click "Next", then select "Jabber" from the list and click "Next". This takes you to the "Basic Setup" tab. Here you need to enter your full GMail address for "Jabber ID" (something like your.name@gmail.com) optionally enter you password and check "Remember password" for automatic login. Next you need to click on the "Connection" tab, which is where things become less obvious. You need to check all three of the boxes ("Use protocol encryption (SSL)", "Allow plain-text password authorisation" and "Override default server information"). You then need to enter "talk.google.com" for "Server" and change the port to 5223 (if it isn't already).
That should be it (well, it worked for me). Obviously you can't use the voice messaging capabilities yet as that's only available for Google's own client. Still, Skype is quite viable for that at the moment.
